Letter, 1904 October 5, Berkeley [California to] Mrs. [Anna Catherine] Markham [Staten Island, New York] / Bailey Millard. 1904.

Informs her that he and his wife are leaving for a trip to Mexico in search of new literary material. He is finding good demand for his works and his novel, "The Lure o'Gold" is on the "best-selling list in the Bookman." He also asks her to urge Markham to write more poetry for the literary department of the Examiner. He is also in the process of building a new home in Berkeley working with an architect. "An architect is some one who plans for you something you don't want at a price you can't afford."

Bailey Millard (1859-1941) was born in Markesan, Wisconsin. Much of his education was obtained as a printer's devil and tramp printer. He worked his way west through a succession of newspaper and printing shops. In the 1890s he was city editor or literary editor of the San Francisco Call and the Examiner, and in 1918-1919 was managing editor of the San Francisco Evening Bulletin .
